Meet Cesar, Retablo Artisan

Cesar is a native of Huamanga, the capital of the region of Ayacucho.  He makes “retablos” out of plaster, paint, and wood.  Cesar has been making retablos since he was 13 years old.  He attended a trade school where he learned the art. 

Cesar enjoys making the intricate, brightly colored pieces, and sees himself as a true artist.  However, he hopes that his son will have a different life.  He dreams that his son will be able to go to the university and find a secure job as a professional.

Cesar sees a culture of sharing and working together in Ayacucho.  He is proud of his work and his home and hopes that clients can see his pride in his beautiful retablos.
